Fine. Look up the dictionary definition of the word and you’ll find so many meanings based on use of context; cut so fine, Fine Wine, etc. Although, there is one meaning that isn’t in the dictionary; not the ones that I’ve seen. The meaning I’m talking about has to do with the state of being.
We don’t think about it now, but what is the first thing that anyone says when you ask them how they are doing? Or How are you?… “Fine.” The context here, you won’t find in a dictionary; I don’t know why, considering we use this word constantly.
My belief is that probably due to the fact that ‘fine’ is such generic term. Its more likely to just close a question or conversation rather continue the dialog. Think about it. When you ask someone how they’re feeling and he/she says ‘Fine’, are you likely to take that topic any further?
The band Aerosmith famously turned the word Fine into an acronym for “Fucked up, Insecure, Neurotic and Emotional”. I’ve not heard the song, but this similar acronym was refined and used in the movie “Italian Job” as “Freaked out, Insecure, Neurotic and Emotional”.
So people, I’m not fine; I’m Awesome. 🙂
